Maskil.Info Update

Domain Registrar

Slight setback with using Bluehost as my domain registrar instead of Godaddy. I recently updated my contact details on my parked domains. This is apparently seen by the Big Daddy as a “Change of Registered Name Holder. This is an opt-in process during which the new Registered Name Holder agrees not to transfer for 60-days. This domain will be transferrable on 7/29/2009.” This is supposed to be for my protection. I can’t help thinking it’s just there to make Godaddy “stickier” as domain registrar.

I haven’t yet decided whether to appeal, or just put it on hold until the end of July.

FTP Client

I’ve downloaded and installed the latest version of the FileZilla Client for Windows XP. FileZilla appears to have become pretty much the standard.

Resources

Busy bookmarking Wordpress resources in a dedicated Folder. Still no closer to a decision regarding a Template.

Currently busy with

Create subdomain structure for Maskil.Info, download latest Wordpress code. Decide on a theme.

Background

I haven’t been happy with where I am in the blogging world for some time. I’m not prolific enough to maintain four blogs, plus my micro-blogging activities on Twitter, etc. My blogs don’t look professional, and I don’t have the coding skills to be able to put lipstick on the Blogger/Blogspot pig.

Another factor: If someone asks me for the name of my blog, as people often do, I want to be able to give the short answer “here”, not “mostly here and here, but also sometimes here”.

So, I need a blog that looks smart and professional, with more choice and control over settings and appearance (but that doesn’t require high level technical skills to maintain). I need to focus on a single blog initially, that revolves around me and my interests (Maskil) rather than a particular issue or approach (e.g. Altneuland).

I would have preferred the blog to be hosted/managed for me. For this reason, I was initially attracted to Typepad, but one hears too many bad reports about them. I also started doing a little research into migrating my Blogger posts to Typepad, but it’s a nightmare and there was no support to be had. It would also be nice if all templates were signed off by the platform, and I need to be able to use my custom domain name (Maskil.info), as this is what I’m building my “brand” around.

That’s the background, so where does that leave me?

Well, I’ve decided to toe the conventional line, which says that all serious bloggers are using self-hosted Wordpress. So be it.

Host

My first step was to select a Web hosting service. No real science here; I picked up a few names from other blogs I trust and Googled them. Most had more negative than positive reviews, but this appears to be par for the course with this industry.

I eventually settled on Bluehost.Com, whose negative/positive ratio was better than most. I selected a 24-month contract, at $3.95 per month (about R750, billed in advance), which gives me unlimited “just about everything”.

After completing the form, I received the error message “Your order is NOT YET COMPLETE. To complete your order, please call our Billing department as soon as possible ...". I phoned the number in the US (no idea what that’s going to cost me). My call was handled swiftly and I was told I need to fax or e-mail a copy of my identity document and the credit card I paid with. After hanging up, I encountered the next problem: no e-mail address for the Billing Dept. on the Bluehost site! I got the address from their abuse@ mailbox and scanned and sent the documents off. I received my confirmation fairly shortly thereafter.

Next steps

So, I have my domain name Maskil.info (have had it for a while) and a host. Next steps are to install WP (I’d like to set up both Test and Live installations, if possible), select a WP Template (that’s another story!) and start installing it and my plug-ins and widgets (note my casual familiarity with the jargon).

I’d like to be tentatively Live by 1 July, then start migrating my posts from their old Blogger locations, while cautiously adding plug-ins and widgets.

I want to use the convention blog.Maskil.info if possible, otherwise Maskil.info/blog.

Templates

The choice is so wide it’s mind numbing. This is not even choice, it’s just overload! I currently favour one of the template “frameworks” such as Thesis, Carrington or Onepress. Any thoughts?

Domain registrar

Although strictly speaking it’s not necessary to use the same provider as both Domain Registrar and Web Host, I decided it would make things easier (e.g. by eliminating the who does what thought process each time). I’ve initiated the transfer from Godaddy.com to Bluehost.com.

Just to clear up any confusion about what comment system has or hasn’t been implemented where:

I completed the installation of JS-Kit Comments (formerly HaloScan) across all blogs.

Results were VERY mixed. JS-Kit Comments installed successfully on the following blogs:

Altneuland

Birkenreis (Old)

Cafe Birkenreis

Plant More Trees

It didn’t install properly on the following blogs, however, which means that I don’t have a single, consistent comments system across blogs.

J-Blogosphere

Workbench

JS-Kit Comments wasn’t my first choice (no offence, guys). I initially attempted to install Disqus, and then IntenseDebate, but without success. Disqus hasn’t yet responded to my forum post. (I’m sure both would have worked correctly on a “fresh”, unmodified Blogger template.)

JS-Kit Comments does have one major advantage over the other two, and that’s its ability to import your existing Blogger comments when you implement and export your comments to Blogger if you back it out. It apparently maintains your comments on both systems while you’re using it.

One more thing to come out of this exercise is that I have created a profile for Maskil on all three systems.

DISQUS

IntenseDebate

JS-Kit: Comments, ratings, polls and surveys, Navigator, chat and more...

Change Log: IntenseDebate

Have successfully installed JS-Kit Comments on Birkenreis (Old), but can’t get it to work on Workbench.

Disqus comment system won’t work on either.

This post is also being used to test IntenseDebate on Workbench. It might work because there’s a Widgetised install.

Messy, very messy…

Disqus Test Post #2

This is Test Post #2 for testing the Disqus comment system.  Let’s hope were all much better after a good night’s sleep.

Here goes…

I’ve just implemented the Disqus comment system on this blog, and this is a test post to see how it looks.

I selected the option to: Use Disqus on future blog entries only

Rather than: Use Disqus on all entries. This will hide existing comments

I don’t have all that many comments on my blogs, but I’d hate to lose any of them.

One wouldn’t think that your choice of commenting systems would make a big difference to the site’s popularity/traffic, but by all accounts it does, and Disqus, pronounced "discuss", apparently leads the pack at the moment.

Anyway, what do I have to lose?

It’s nearly 22h00 and my eyes are really blurry, so I’m packing it in. The rest will have to wait for the morning…

I’m in the process of implementing the Followers (Google Friend Connect) Gadget across all my blogs, starting as usual with this one.

You’ll find it under “Follow Me” in the Sidebar.

Over time, I think I’d like to implement the “Social bar” rather than the Members Gadget, but that involves quite a bit more copy & paste of code snippets.

Please feel free to add yourself as a Follower to any of Maskil’s blogs!

Official Google Blog: Google Friend Connect: now available

Change log: Follow me on Twitter

My Twitter “Followers” have increased substantially since I began “covering” the IDF operations in Gaza late last year. I’m now at about 50-odd Followers. This might not sound like a lot, but is impressive considering how little effort I’ve put into increasing that following.

In deference to this new audience, I have added a “Follow me on Twitter” badge to my Blogger blogs, as part of my “More of me” sidebar widgets. For now, I’ve made use of the Interactive Flash Widget from Twitter itself, but I will look around for something a bit more eye-catching. Also possibly something that uses less display real-estate.

So if you’re not already following Maskil on Twitter, here’s your chance. I usually “Tweet” only once a day, six days a week (excluding Shabbat); more often in the case of dramatic events such as the recent conflict in Gaza.

If you’d like to receive a Tweet each time my blog content is updated, then simply follow Maskil_Update here.

This is a post created in order to test the interface with Google Reader and

I’ve just signed up and been approved for the ZaraMart Affiliate Program (Judaica and other goods from Israel).

I’ve implemented this banner:

ZaraMart

On the following blogs, i.e. any of my blogs with a Jewish theme, or test blogs such as this one.

http://birkenreis.blogspot.com/
http://blog.altneuland.info/
http://blog.cafebirkenreis.com/
http://j-workbench.blogspot.com/

The advert is a Banner Size: 392 X 72. They didn’t have the same theme in a Banner Size: 728 X 90, so I’ve requested one. I should maybe have asked for the same theme in a vertical (sidebar) ad, just to try out different combinations.

I did also sign up with another outfit called JudaicaHeaven [dot] com, but the adverts they e-mailed me were just .GIF files. Can’t see how they would track any referrals from my sites that way.

Anyway, let’s hope we can start generating a little revenue from this…

Was still not working the last time I tried it…

I've just completed the rollout of the Google Analytics code to all 6 blogs. At least now I will have standardized, reliable analytics across all my blogs (Test and Live), to give me a better idea of where to focus my efforts. I’ll also have a consistent “start date” for the stats across the board.

At first glance, it looked as if I would need to edit the HTML Template for each blog, something I try to avoid as far as possible. After a little searching, however, I found instructions for a widgetised install, i.e. using the Add a Gadget (formerly known as Page Element). The whole process took only about half an hour in total.

If I’d know it would be this easy, I would have tackled it sooner! Now I just need a few visitors…

The next step will be to seek out and destroy any remaining code for any other analytics services I’ve tried out along the way.

Note to self: Make sure you don’t delete any useful history in the process!

All the Google goodies for webmasters can be accessed from this master page:

Google Webmaster Central

I’m in the process of testing the brand new Amazon Associates widget: the Page Recommender Widget. The code is live on both Workbench and Birkenreis (Old). Here’s what they had to say about it in the message announcing it:

The Page Recommender Widget displays links to other pages on your site and links to Amazon products – both tailored to each individual visitor's interests using the same world-class recommendations technology that powers recommendations on Amazon's own site. Visitors will spend more time on your site as they discover new content that is relevant to them. In addition, you will earn referral fees based upon our highly targeted product recommendations.

Talk about going from famine to feast! I now have three alternatives for recommending other pages from my sites to visitors: this one, outbrain and Sphere. Outbrain is basically a done deal, and the Amazon offering looks promising because it combines page AND product recommendations. I’ll probably put Sphere on hold until they come up with a better way to deploy their code.

This is a quick and dirty post, so no links or tags.

Change log: outbrain

Just finished the rollout of the outbrain code to all my blogs. I thought it only gave blog publishers the /5 star rating facility, but it seems it offers a whole lot more! I will put together a more detailed post IDC. Thank goodness I didn’t just opt for the Blogger in Draft star rating setting.

I’m now thinking I don’t even need the Sphere related content stuff. That would have been a whole lot more work, as it requires code snippets to be manually inserted in each HTML template (groan).

Next rollout will be the ShareThis widget.

outbrain - Content Ratings & Recommendations

Blog descriptions

I’ve just gone through the process of drafting and entering brief descriptions for my family of blogs (referring to Blogger’s Settings/Basic/Description field). The descriptions are still a work in progress; expect to see changes and refinements until they have completely bedded down. No changes to that for my oldest blog, Altneuland. For now, “Advocating a secure & just Israel...” pretty much says it all. Adding more words would simply be superfluous.
